Nutmeg Cake

This recipe comes from
Denise Bailey
of

She was excited to share this recipe which was handed down by her mother.   She is pretty sure it was her grandmother's recipe who was old Pennsylvania Dutch, which would make this a third generation recipe.

NUTMEG CAKE

1 cup sugar
2 cups flour
1 cup buttermilk (if you do not have buttermilk, add 1 Tablespoon white vinegar to 1 cup milk and let sit for 5 minutes)
1/2 cup shortening (her grandma used butter)
1 egg
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon vanilla
pinch of salt

Mix dry ingredients together.  Add egg, milk, vanilla and mix until ingredients are "wet".  Do NOT over mix.

Pour into a greased and floured 9X12" pan and bake at 350 for 35 minutes.

Some notes that Denise has shared about this recipe:
It does not make a raised cake - it will only be about 2-3" high when baked.

As an icing, her Mother would make cooked vanilla pudding with sliced bananas in and topped off the cake slices while still warm.

This sounds fabulous!   Thank you Denise for sharing this with us.
